Ski S'cool Program

Introduce your students to the joy of cross-country skiing

​

Ski S'Cool is a fun and engaging learn-to-ski program designed for Whitehorse students in Kindergarten through Grade 4. The program introduces children to the fundamentals of cross-country skiing through games, exploration, and age-appropriate activities in a safe and supportive outdoor environment.

​

Participating classes receive three on-snow lessons between December and March (weather and snow conditions permitting). Lessons are led by certified instructors who focus on building confidence, developing basic ski skills, and fostering a lifelong enjoyment of winter physical activity.

​

To ensure a positive learning experience, classes are divided into smaller groups and supported by two or three instructors. Students learn fundamental skills such as:

​

  • Getting up and down safely on skis

  • Balance and gliding

  • Diagonal stride

  • Uphill herringbone

  • Snowplow stopping and turning

  • Confidence moving on varied terrain

​

Beyond skiing skills, Ski S'Cool helps students develop physical literacy, confidence, teamwork, and an appreciation for outdoor activity during the winter months.

Good to Know

Registration & Fees

  • Registration is coordinated through Whitehorse schools.

  • The program fee is $20 per student and includes:

    • Three instructor-led ski lessons

    • Ski equipment rental

    • Trail passes

  • Lessons build from week to week, and students are encouraged to attend all three sessions.

  • Schools are invoiced after the program is completed. Invoices are sent directly to the school in April.

Meeting Location & Timing

  • Sessions are 1 hour and 15 minutes long.

  • Classes should arrive at the scheduled start time.

  • The meeting point is the Ski S'Cool Hut, located at the south end of the Canada Games Centre parking lot.

 

Teacher & Adult Support

  • A teacher and at least one additional adult helper must accompany each class.

  • Adult helpers are encouraged to ski with the group whenever possible.

 

Weather & Trail Conditions

  • Our instructional temperature cutoff is -20°C.

  • Classes may be postponed due to cold temperatures, trail conditions, or other safety concerns.

  • Every effort will be made to reschedule missed sessions.

What students should bring

  • Students should arrive dressed for winter conditions and prepared to be outdoors for up to 60 minutes.

  • Mittens are recommended over gloves.

  • A warm hat (toque) is required, and a neck gaiter or scarf is recommended.

  • Wool socks are recommended.

  • Students should have a snack, drink water, and use the washroom before arriving.

What happens during a Ski S'Cool session?

Students spend approximately 45 minutes on snow learning ski skills through games and activities. The remainder of the session is used for fitting equipment and preparing to return to school.

Why do teachers need to bring an additional adult helper?

Classes are typically divided into smaller groups. Having at least two adults present helps support students who may need assistance due to cold weather, emotional concerns, equipment issues, or minor injuries.

What happens if it is too cold to ski?

The instructional temperature cutoff is -20°C. Sessions may also be postponed due to wind chill, poor trail conditions, or other safety concerns. When possible, missed sessions will be rescheduled.

What if trail conditions are poor?

Safety is our priority. If trail conditions are deemed unsafe for young skiers, the session will be postponed and rescheduled whenever possible.

Self-Guided School Visits

Not looking for lessons? Schools are welcome to organize their own ski outing at the Whitehorse Nordic Centre.

​

  • Trail pass: $4 per student

  • Equipment rental (optional): $5 per student

  • Teachers and chaperones supervise the group
